Hi I am trying to connect to our other site which has a SonicWALL VPN. They have given me the login details to connect but it keeps failing and they say it is my end. Is there anything I need to configure on my draytek router to enable me to connect to the VPN. I have tried both SonicWALL global client and windows built in VPN connection wizard. Error message I get on SonicWALL global client is sonicwall peer is not responding to phase 1 isakmp error message I get on built in VPN is The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer. SonicWALL offers 3 varieties of VPN (for clients anyway): Global VPN Client (GVC), NetExtender (SSLVPN)/MobileConnect, and L2TP VPN.
The first two are my preference as they seem to work better, and they are licensed. L2TP doesn't require licenses, but it's not as stable in my experiences as the other two. The Global VPN Client is only available on Windows, so if you're not on Windows, that's not an option for you. NetExtender is available for any desktop OS, and on mobile devices you would use MobileConnect (you can also use this on a Mac, which is a better option considering it doesn't require Java). L2TP just uses the OS's builtin L2TP support, so it should work on anything that supports L2TP. All three have to be configured on the SonicWALL before you can use them- if you're trying to connect using one that isn't setup, it's not going to work.
In the event you are not trying to connect to the VPN in order to reach things behind it, but establish a bridge between two networks, that's entirely different (and would be called a Site-to-Site VPN). That has to be done between network devices. SonicWALL offers 3 varieties of VPN (for clients anyway): Global VPN Client (GVC), NetExtender (SSLVPN)/MobileConnect, and L2TP VPN.
